Review by Paul D Houston
There are parts of the Old South that hold dark magic in their blood drenched acres. Parts cursed by every witch and devil that roam the cosmos. And every now and again, we are reminded that this is so, by the stories and music that emanate from these parts. "The Old Black River" by THE REVEREND BRAMBLE CHILDRESS AND THE LOCUSTVILLE TEEN REVIVAL is such a collection of music. While only being a 5 song ep, every one of these songs is a strange and darkly beautiful story of darkness, life and the oddity of every aspect of this weird ass universe.
With its overtones of dark alt-country and LSD soaked Americana, this ep wormed its way into my mind. I found it's dark edges super appealing. It's rough, psychedelic riffs and prayer like vocals are hypnotizing in a manner. I hungrily absorbed every beat, incantation and cry from these 5 songs.
I particularly liked the song "The Creature After Me"...
I'm hoping to hear more eccentric music from this band, as this 5 song EP was not enough! This is quality stuff overall and if you are into slightly scary, weird ass shit, check this out!
